Exterior and hull form
- Outer shell platingPlating
- The continuous watertight plating that encloses the hull, including side, bilge, bottom, bow, and stern regions. Open
- Side shell platingPlating
- The outer shell on the port and starboard sides, extending from the deck edge to the bilge transition. Open
- Bottom shell platingPlating
- The underwater shell extending from the centreline bottom into the lower bilge region. Open
- Bilge platingPlating
- The curved shell region where the bottom turns into the side; it is not a separately attached body. Open
- Flat plate keelPlating strake
- The strengthened centreline strake of bottom shell plating, normally flush with the surrounding shell. Open
- Weather deck platingDeck plating
- The plating of the uppermost continuous deck exposed to weather and supporting deck outfitting. Open
- Bow shell platingPlating
- The curved forward outer shell, excluding the narrow stem edge and the submerged bulbous bow region. Open

- The upper boundary of the double bottom and lower boundary of cargo tanks; also called the tank top. Open
